Netanyahu Targets Arab Parties With Voter Fraud Claims

Netanyahu alleges voter fraud by Arab parties after Israel's election; officials say there's no evidence of systemic compromise.

At a glance

  • With nearly 93% of votes counted, Netanyahu’s bloc was projected to win 53 seats and Gadi Eisenkot’s opposition bloc 48—both short of the 61 needed for a parliamentary majority. Arab-led parties were projected to secure a record 19 seats.
  • Netanyahu and his allies have accused Arab parties of electoral misconduct. Police have arrested at least seven people on suspicion of voter fraud, but those investigations do not establish that the overall election result is compromised.
  • Arab leaders accuse Netanyahu of trying to delegitimize their voters and discourage Eisenkot from forming a government with their support. Analysts say that blocking Arab–Jewish cooperation could help Netanyahu remain in office.
  • Netanyahu remains caretaker prime minister. President Isaac Herzog will consult party leaders before selecting a candidate to attempt to form a government.

Context

The October 27 election followed public anger over Netanyahu’s leadership and demands for accountability over the October 7, 2023 attacks. Thousands rallied against the government three days before voting, calling for an independent state commission of inquiry that Netanyahu has resisted. The election has now produced a deadlock, with Arab parties potentially decisive in determining whether an alternative government can emerge.

Why it matters

There were signs of public frustration before the election, and Netanyahu now faces a result that leaves him without a governing majority. His bloc is projected to drop from its original 64 seats to 53, leaving his future dependent on coalition talks.

The earlier rallies including participation by survivors, former hostages and bereaved families show that the challenge concerns accountability as well as party politics. Netanyahu’s attacks on Arab parties now risk further polarising an already uncertain transition.

What we think

Netanyahu faces a serious challenge, but a change of government is far from certain.

A unity coalition is one possibility. If negotiations fail, Israel could face another election in 2027, prolonging the uncertainty and keeping Netanyahu in office as caretaker.

Even if Eisenkot forms a government, that would not necessarily mean a major shift on Palestinian statehood, as leading parties remain opposed to an independent Palestinian state.
