At a glance

  • Dr Khalilur Rahman will assume the presidency of the 81st UN General Assembly at 1:00 am Wednesday, Bangladesh time, when the session opens at UN Headquarters in New York.
  • Khalilur Rahman will take over from outgoing UNGA President Annalena Baerbock of Germany.
  • He won the post on June 2, defeating Cyprus’s Andreas Kakouris by 99 votes to 91 in a close UN vote.
  • UN Secretary General António Guterres met Khalilur Rahman in New York on September 7 before the opening of the new session.
  • The 81st UNGA session will run until September 7, 2027. Bangladesh last held the post in 1986 to 1987, when Humayun Rasheed Chowdhury was UNGA president.
  • Khalilur Rahman’s agenda will focus on UN reform, peace, development, climate action, refugee issues, technology and a stronger voice for developing countries.

Context

Khalilur Rahman is Bangladesh’s foreign minister and a career diplomat with more than 30 years of experience connected to the United Nations. He will lead the 193-member General Assembly under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.” The UNGA will hold its annual General Debate later this month, bringing presidents, prime ministers and other world leaders to New York.

Why It Matters

The UN is entering this session during wars, global political tensions and financial pressure. Big powers often disagree on issues such as conflicts, climate action, trade, and UN reform. This makes it harder for the UN to make common decisions. Khalilur Rahman’s victory was close, showing that countries are divided even over the UNGA presidency.

As president, he will guide meetings, choose areas of focus and help countries find common ground. He will not control UN decisions alone, but he can influence which issues get global attention. His agenda puts Bangladesh-linked concerns, including climate funding, the Rohingya crisis, peacekeeping and the interests of poorer countries, closer to the centre of UN discussions. The presidency also places Bangladesh in a highly visible global role at a time when the country is trying to strengthen its diplomatic standing.

What We Think About

The presidency is mainly a diplomatic platform, not a direct source of money or policy change. Its value will be measured by concrete outcomes in climate funding, Rohingya support, trade links and Bangladesh’s global image. Khalilur Rahman will chair the Assembly for all 193 UN member states, so he will need to stay neutral even when Bangladesh has its own interests. International attention will also bring closer scrutiny of Bangladesh’s politics, economy and governance. The year will show whether greater visibility can become a lasting diplomatic influence.
